All our managed payroll service clients are supported and guided through each PAYE year by our team member, Liz Vidler. It’s always important to keep up to date and learn new skills. Liz did that on her recent family holiday.

Meet Payroll Team Member – Liz Vidler, aka ‘Payroll Surfer’

I started working in the payroll field 1988. Back then, we calculated holiday pay and SSP manually. Of course, all adjustments had to be worked out using tax and national insurance manual tables. So, I can truthfully say I know how to calculate net pay from first principles.

In 2002 I studied with The Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals to obtain a Diploma in Payroll Management. They require that I keep up to date with all new payroll regulations brought in by the government. Over the years this has seen the introduction of online year end filing, rather than paper returns, followed by RTI monthly/weekly filing. More recently National Minimum wage, Pension Auto Enrolment and the introduction of the Employment Allowance.  I’ve also studied with The Open University to achieve a Bachelor of Science honours degree in Mathematics.

There are always timetables in the world of payroll and deadlines must be met however, everyone needs and deserves holiday. I decided to take the second week of August for my holiday this year.

My family and I travelled down to Sennen Cove in Cornwall and we booked on a three day surfing course at Smart Surf School.  The trainers were patient and helpful and on the final day we had the school’s owner Sam Smart who actually managed to show me how to stand on the board! Here’s the picture for proof!

I have been running payrolls for 34 years but I’m always learning new things.

The moral of this story is that you are never too old to learn new talents and the best way to go forward in business is always be open to learning and improving.
